Economic Data Profile Definitions
January 2020 Definitions
2009-2019 Change: Percent change in number of jobs as measured by covered employment (covered employment is employment except self-employed) between 2009 and 2019 for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
2019-2029 Projected Change: Percent change in number of jobs as projected by covered employment (covered employment is employment except self-employed) between 2019-2029 for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Employment: 2019 covered employment (covered employment is employment except self-employed) for the Top 5 industries for the selected location. The share of employment for the industry is represented in parenthesis. The top 5 industries follow the North American Industry Classification System NAICS at 2-digit industry classification.
Indicator (on Kentucky map): a drop down menu that allows selection between fourindicators for the Kentucky counties map.
Labor Force: Number working age people (16 and older) for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Labor Force Rate: Percent of people age 16 and older employed or unemployed and actively looking for work, from total population.
Location: a drop down menu that allows selection of a Kentucky county or Area Development District (ADD).
Location Quotient (LQ): indicator measuring the concentration or size of a region’s industry as compared with the national average. The national benchmark is 1. A LQ greater than 1 means that the industry is more concentrated in the selected area as compared to the nation and vice-versa. The Top 5 industry sectors with highest 2019 location quotient (LQ) for the selected location are represented in the bar chart on the left column of the profile.
Commute Time: Average number of minutes for commuters to travel to work for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Median Household Income: Household income value that divides the household income distribution into halves – one half of households with income above the median and the other half with income below the median. The measure is provided for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Personal Income: 2019 total personal labor and non-labor income for the selected location.
- Labor Income: 2019 earnings from wages and salaries.
- Non-labor Income: 2019 earnings from transfer payments (government retirement and disability insurance benefits, Medicare or Medicaid payments, unemployment insurance benefits, etc.) and investments (dividends, interest, rent).
Population: Total number of people by place of residence.
Population in Poverty: Percent of people living in poverty for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Total Jobs: Covered employment for 2009, 2019 and 2029 (covered employment is employment except self-employed). The measure is provided for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
Unemployment Rate: Percent of unemployed of the total labor force for the selected location, Kentucky and U.S.
