Summaries
Each of the following communities hosted summer Community Design interns to re-envision the possibilities contained within their public spaces. While full plans are provided to community leaders at the completion of each project to be utilized as either stand-alone visualizations, or as part of larger strategic community visions, we have provided summaries of each of the completed summer internships below.

Trimble KY 2025
Five students from different academic disciplines explored how design, research, and community collaboration can strengthen rural economies and enhance quality of life in Trimble County by identifying opportunities for growth while honoring Trimble County’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historic character.

Maysville KY 2024
Nine students representing the fields of landscape architecture, community leadership, agriculture, and historic preservation worked together to explore and develop recommendations for how Maysville could better connect its historic downtown, riverfront, and neighborhoods.

Ohio River Way Challenge 2024
Nine Community Design interns with Blueprint Kentucky (formerly CEDIK) and Landscape Architecture faculty and staff began their summer immersion in Maysville by embarking on a river canoe journey along the Ohio River as part of the Ohio River Way Challenge on June 5, 2024.

Mayfield KY 2023
Following the devastation caused by the December 2021 tornado, the Mayfield project provided students with hands-on experience in community design and recovery planning while contributing meaningful recommendations for long-term prosperity. The fellowship built upon previous community design initiatives funded through USDA to strengthen rural economies and foster sustainable growth across Kentucky.

Fulton KY 2023
Supported by a USDA Workforce Development Grant, the 2023 summer fellowship brought together nine multidisciplinary students in order to develop a community plan that built upon Fulton’s strengths and identity while addressing long-term recovery needs following the 2021 tornadoes.

Irvine KY 2022
Between the rich history of the railway industry, its beautiful scenery perfect for outdoor adventures, and the unique architecture of the downtown, Irvine is unique in many ways. Historically a hustling and bustling town, Community Design Interns created a plan for Irvine's downtown to put Irvine back on the path towards economic revitalization and prosperity.

Flemingsburg KY 2022
The work of design interns in Flemingsburg, KY 2022 laid a foundation for residents to unite with a common vision for the future of their city; a vision that honors Flemingsburg’s vibrant history, geography, people and perseverance. A plan that “bridges” past, present and future is what is required for Flemingsburg.

Winchester KY 2020-2021
Through a partnership with UK College of Design and the Department of Landscape Architecture, many students and independent studies were focused in the Winchester Design Studio. Topics varied from developing multifamily housing, public realm furnishings, and adult education facilities. Students had the opportunity to work closely with local community members, government officials, and thought leaders to tailor their studies.

Jenkins KY 2019
The Jenkins summer fellowship focused on supporting the City of Jenkins in envisioning how design and recreation could strengthen economic growth, community health, and overall livability. Through fieldwork, design analysis, and engagement with existing plans, the team worked to create a roadmap that connects Jenkins’ natural assets—particularly Elkhorn Lake—with its downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

Harlan KY 2019
Given the different backgrounds of 2019's student interns, their work focused on the buildings and places in downtown Harlan that help give the downtown its unique character. Once these elements were identified, the students worked together to determine how these elements could be capitalized on to support downtown revitalization.

Manchester KY 2018
Consisting of 4 multi-disciplinary interns this effort was specifically tailored for Manchester, where the students studied the city’s built and natural environments to determine the DNA of the downtown. This information was used to create a menu of potential projects for the city to be used as a foundation for future revitalization efforts.
